I think the best way to express your gratitude is to not apologize for receiving it. One of the worst things we do is to convince ourselves that we’re not deserving of help or kindness.
The next best way is to say thank you and promise to carry that kindness forward. If you practice always being open to help and receive help, you’ll no longer have to think “I owe you,” or “I’ll pay you back.” Keeping score makes relationships transactional. You may as well hang out with your lawyer.
These aren’t easy ways to be, not in the structures we have today. But I believe with each little effort we make among ourselves, we can build tiny islands of gratitude and welcome each other to our shores.
